I have been living MCS-CI for 15 years...it has been a very long struggle and there are still many people that know me twho think it is all in my head. I agee with jennifer, if this is in our head, why havent the shrinks been able to treat us? Family get to gethers are very tough for me as well and I try to get out of them any way I can without it causing a family issue. Its just better that way, otherwise I feel like a pinball bouncing around between perfurmes, laundry soap, makeup etc...
Chemical injury is the cause, Multiple chemical sensitivity is the consequence of chemical intoxication and the official term all over the world. An excellent
professional explanation you will find on thetenthparadigm.
Multiple chemical sensitivity is the official term for this disease all over the world. Chemical injury is the cause, chemical sensitivity is the consequence. Chemical intoxication disrupts the regulation of NMDA-receptor on neural cells and makes it hyperactive (sensitive). Excellent explanation in Prof. Martin Palls book Explaining unexplained Illnesses and on his website thetenthparadigm.
Getting understanding from others is difficult but not impossible. Since I started calling it "injury", vs allergy, & put a small sign on my mask, people seem more compassionate. I also carry copies of pamphlets(short, easy to read)about the illness to help people understand. I also enjoy being outdoors, but must wear the mask if around others. Dryer sheets in clothing, or hairspray causes ill reaction, and being outside doesn't make it better. Must be careful walking by laundromamats & stores
I also have this illness & issues: fear of passing people on the street, their products might cause my airways to tighten or to feel faint. I wear a painters mask in public, now. I don't have psychiatric history, and am only feeling depressed because my life is so limited by the physiologicals of this illness. Everything she said is true & family functions are out of the question. I don't believe its an allergy, but an injury. Allergies can go away, but there's no known cure for this, yet.
Excellent film, thank you for sharing it. I have the same affliction, though I prefer to call it chemical injury, since the term MCS implies that we're just too "sensitive" and need to get over it. I'm so glad Jennifer talked about the social aspects of our illness, because aside from the physical suffering, it's our biggest loss. Many of us feel like pariahs. It's very sad.
