(Video has English subtitles and the original lyrics in German below)
The song is a meditation on night and dreams composed by Schubert with lyrics by Matthäus von Collin that originated in the mid 1820s.
The video features American soloist, Renée Fleming, and paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Edward Hopper, Rembrandt, with artwork by Spadecaller.

Heilge Nacht, du sinkest nieder;
Nieder wallen auch die Träume
Wie dein Mondlicht durch die Räume,
Durch der Menschen stille Brust.
Die belauschen sie mit Lust;
Rufen, wenn der Tag erwacht:
Kehre wieder, heilge Nacht!
Holde Träume, kehret wieder!

  • I supposse the tempo is almost freakishly slow, and could be 'criticized.' But Ms. Fleming floats the line like an angel, while still keeping an ever clear forward momentuum. The pianist is doing the same equally well. Amazing-Fantastic. Elly Ameling's is the other more relatively current recorded performance which completely charms and enthralls. An especial thank you to Franz Schubert, who continues to astound and move me decades after 'we' first met. Thanks so much for this upload,

  • And to think a book from the 60's of German Lierder brought me to this video. =)

    -goes back to listening-

  • The amazing this is about Renee that this populare songs has been performed by all the great singers, lieder singers, and she is simply sooooo much better

  • Das war super wunderschön!!!!! :D

  • I can't imagine anyone singing this more beautifully!

  • Who is the pianist?

  • GREAT!

  • Even ever slower she accomplishes what this lied needs. It is held ! It is sustained . I love this version .there r so many but this one is special and the pianist gets the clarity of the moving voices! How didi Schubert do it?
