Yes the stewards promised McLaren to give the pole positiion on the clean side. McLaren wanted it. Berger wanted it. Senna wanted it. And that before the qualifying. After Senna got the pole Balestre told the stewards not to put the pole position on the clean side only to let Prost be on that side. Senna said Balestre can do what he want but he will be the leader after the first corner on every price. Prost let too much space and Senna tried to get the lead on every price. So they crashed.

@shoeme69 He never admitted it. That's just a myth from the internet. He never said it was on purpose. Compare it with his crash with Brundle in the Formula 3. It was definetely the same crash. Search for it on youtube.

@shoeme69 Like on the shicane 1989. They crashed there too. Same situation, different result. Was it on purpose too from Senna? I don't think so. He had only a chance too overtake if he were side by side. He wasn't he was far behind Prost. They crashed and Prost was champion. Same situation 1997 between Villeneuve and Schumacher. Villeneuve was too aggressive on that overtake. Schumacher left too much space so they crashed too. All three crashes were 50/50. Normal race incitends.

@shoeme69 Yes and Prost cutted Sennas line. It was a 50/50 incident. Prost let too much space on the right side knowing Senna is right beside him and Senna was too aggressive trying to pass. So that's called a normal race incident. Nothing special. Only Prost, Balestre and the french newspaper saw it from a different angle.

Senna said on an interview after a race in 1992 he felt very sad what happened there and he wanted to win the title on the race track. And not that way he actually did.
