Gothia Cup 2009 - the worlds largest youth tournament

Over 34 000 football players representing 1561 teams from 63 countries has traveled to Gothenburg, Sweden this week to participate in the worlds largest youth football tournament Gothia Cup. The players, with parents and leaders, filled the Ullevi Stadiums 52 000 seats during the spectacular opening ceremony of this years Gothia Cup.
One of the many games at the opening day was between the Iraqi team Al Madina and the Roanoke Stars Premier from USA. It was a special day for the Iraqi team who wanted for many years to come to Gothia Cup but was stopped in difficulties of getting a visa.




- We had an idea 35 years ago, some young people here in Gothenburg wanted to create a meeting place for young people for all over the world. And we thought what could be better than a football tournament, says Dennis Andersson, General Secretary of Gothia Cup. 


Dennis also talks about the cups history and how it has developed during the years becoming the biggest meeting place for youths in the world.
