The 4th ranked Notre Dame women's basketball team just battled a case of food poisoning. Just a few days ago nearly half the team, including coach Muffet McGraw, was so sick they missed practice. Not a good time to get sick when you've got 16th ranked West Virginia coming to town.
Lindsay Schrader scored eight of her 16 points during a decisive run, Skylar Diggins added 15 and No. 4/5 Notre Dame rallied in the second half to beat No. 16/11 West Virginia 74-66 Sunday.
The Fighting Irish (17-1, 4-1 Big East) improved to 5-1 against ranked opponents while the Mountaineers (18-2, 5-1) fell to 1-2 against ranked teams. The loss also ended a 16-game winning streak for West Virginia, the second longest in school history.
The Irish trailed 44-31 after Madina Ali scored the opening basket of the second half, and trailed 49-39 when Vanessa House hit a 3 for the Mountaineers. But the Irish responded with a 16-3 run led by Schrader. Natalie Novosel capped it with a baseline runner that gave the Irish a 55-52 lead.
The Irish put the game away with a 10-1 burst late to take a 74-63 lead.
Liz Repella led West Virginia with 24 points.
My favorite player is Lindsay Schrader. It is going to be hard to watch a game without her.
