My brand new premiumline Beyerdynamic DT 880 edition 2005 - 250 ohm Semi-Open Reference Class Headphones being unpacked. The set came with a nice leather bag with a soft sponge inside to protect the headphones. The quality of these is unbelivable, the sound is immaculate, the soundstage is enormous and it is extremely well ballanced: bass, mids, highs. I recommend usig this headphone with a headphone amplifier, since it will be very difficult to drive the DT880 without one. I noticed that the DT880 eliminate every background noise, hiss, jitter even at maximum volume. I suspect it's because these headphones are hard to drive and have a quite high impedance. I suspect this is the main advantage the higher impedance headphones(250~600 ohm) have. They are very distinguished looking. They're constructed like a tank, but comfortable like a feather pillow. The headband is covered with a leather band and the muffs are covered with velvet, very soft to the touch. The feel of the headphones is extremely rugged when you hold them in your hands, you could sit on them(I wouldn't recommend it though, DON"T SIT ON THEM :P) and they feel like they will not break, but when you put them on the head they feel very soft and comfortable, definately made for very extended usage. All in all very very well put together. These headphones are of semi-open design so they combine both the advantages of closed headphones(made for studio monitoring and dj mixing) and open headphones(made for extreme sound pleasure, extended soundstage and preventing fatigue). The cord of these headphones is straight which is exactly what I wanted. I bought these headphones to relax while enjoying a nice metal or classical music session. I didn't want the cable to be coiled. The connector is a 3.5 mm stereo jack made with 18k gold to ensure the best signal flow possible and comes with a 3.5mm to 6.3 mm adaptor jack. All in all, this is a great buy and a must have for all audiophiles out there.

  • Quick question, How good is the bass on these? I will be using them to listen to hard trance, old school hip/hop, techno and instrumentals.

  • @LoliciousXD the bass is extremely deep and defined, but without a headphone amp to drive them and a few tweaks in your eq you won't get the desired result.

  • Hi, after your review, I am really considering getting one. But may I ask that is the cable interchangeable? I mean I kinda want a coiled one (Unlike your preference), I am thinking about change it right away once I bought it.

Looking forward to hear your answer!!!

Nice song you put up there!

  • @hanqinshu If you want a coiled DT880, you should look for the DT 880 PRO since it comes with coiled wire. DT 880 Premium edition 2005 comes with straight wire, like mine !!

  • will my yamaha rxv765 power these 250 ohm

  • @pppaullll I have no clue how good receivers drive headphones. It should "boost" your volume if that's what you're thinking. :)

  • On a scale of 1-10 how much do these leak ?

  • @ChromaHunter

The DT990's aren't accurate enough. I don't just want more bass, I want flat response. Also, I've used a Headroom Bithead and the headphone amp on a Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro external cabinet to drive both. Both have plenty of power to drive the 880's to painfully loud.

  • @Username93611 The DT 990 might have been something for you in that case. The DT 880 have neutral bass response, while the DT 990 have enhanced response to bass.

But, I run my DT 880 through a big amplifier and boy do they have bass... More than the freaking big speakers in my room.

The Denon AH-D5000 are 25 OHM by the way... They don't even need amplification to play bass beautifully. The DT 880 come in 80, 250 and 600 ohm. They MUST be amplified properly to sound good.

  • one of the songs sounds like a remix of Slayer - Mandatory Suicide (actually more like the Decapitated death metal version ;o )

  • @Username93611

...those denon's are amazing (no, i haven't actually heard them, just know their reputation and seen their headroom graphs) but they are like twice the street price of the Beyer's and i'd say those 880 db claims are exaggerated, although not completely out of line. For sure those 880's TRY to be flat and do a decent job of it at their price range and in the end do a better job for monitoring than a base heavy can.

  • @evilsnakes1

Relatively is the operative word, there, and the biggest place they fail to have a flat response is in bass response. They're about 5 dB down at 80-120hz, and they're about 10 dB down at 20-40hz. Not the 770's because they're even further off.

  • @Username93611

...lack of base is because they are flat (relatively) for monitoring. I'm sure you know this, but people don't get when you say something like that. If you wanted base, why on earth would you buy 880's? Why not 770's?
