whats even more frightening is all the tourists just standing there watching the wave build up, when i was a kid i vividly remember reading about a tsunami hitting chile: 'the water receded from the shore way out past the low tide mark, as if sucked through a straw, the locals knew what was coming, the cry went out "the sea has retreated!! and nearly all the people reached high ground before the wave came and destroyed all the houses'. if only the tourists knew untold 1000s would be alive today

So they sit through a *10 MINUTE* earthquake, see the tide go out, see the giant wave approaching, and... "Naah! It doesn't have anything to do with the earthquake." That's very sad.

deaths due to insufficient knowledge. Just got irritated by the man who said "naaah" about the earthquake affecting the sea. As someone living near huge bodies of water, they should be responsible by trying to acquire knowledge about anything related to the ocean like tides, occurrences etc. now look, some of them should still be alive now..just sad...

... I can NOT believe as soon as people saw the sea retreat they didnt warn everyone and fukin run. Like seriously it was common knownledge to those who value knowledge. Even when they saw teh WHOLE horrizon was a white wash wave coming they just stand there... Like wtf... Get the kids and run? No film it?... seriously...

@MeFromTheIsland Iagree that's the thing that hurts me when I read these comments about how dumb the people were when back then people weren't as aware of tsunamis as now and it's because of this incident that everyone is aware now.back then you would probably be thinking this low tide then high tide until it's too late cause not all the places felt the quake.
