During the holidays, there are traditionally opportunities where criminals look to take advantage of residents and visitors. Although Arlington Police Officers work to prevent crime as well as respond to emergency situations, there are ways that the community can be an extra set of eyes and ears. One community partnership that makes a difference is the Citizens On Patrol program (C.O.P). C.O.P. has been active in Arlington since the early 1990s, but is now developing a higher visibility in the community.

At the end of November, the Arlington Police Department expanded the C.O.P. program. Volunteers already patrol their own neighborhoods in personal vehicles with magnetic placards. Now there is an opportunity for those same volunteers to begin using city-issued vehicles with the Arlington Citizens On Patrol markings. This expansion is called C.O.P. Mobile, and is an opportunity to help those volunteers have a greater vested interest in partnering with the Arlington Police Department.

To participate, C.O.P. volunteers must have been active for a period of time with proven experience, dedication and commitment before applying to join C.O.P. Mobile. Then they will undergo an additional 12 hours of training before beginning their patrols in the C.O.P Mobile vehicles. The volunteers are able to check the C.O.P. Mobile vehicles out at each of the four Police District Stations and use them to patrol their own neighborhoods or other areas of focus provided by Officers. If there is a particular hot spot, where suspicious or criminal activity has occurred, the C.O.P. Mobile volunteers could be directed to patrol those areas. During their patrols, the volunteers have the capability to report crimes in progress directly to dispatch and, if necessary, get an immediate police response. C.O.P. Mobile volunteers monitor for suspicious activities, while partnering with the Department and are a wonderful asset toward making our community a safer place to live, work and play.
