Fearless// 26 Part 1

Nick licked his lips before beginning, "When my mother was alive she worked for various companies. She traded secrets between them when it was needed. But then she got sick, she had to stop. A lot of people were devastated when she died. One of the owners of a company she worked for explained to me that it was very hard to find someone like my mother, someone who could keep such good secrets. I spent a lot of time at that company after my mother died, everyone was really friendly there. My dad didn't really know how to be a dad after my mother died. It's not that he didn't love me, he was just never that good at showing it."

Nick paused to see if Selena was still listening, surely enough she was. "A year after my mother's death my dad announced that his company was moving him to Chicago. It was really hard for me to say goodbye to everyone at the company, it was as if a piece of my mother was still there."

Nick paused once again, he suddenly felt as if he shouldn't go on; the last thing he wanted to do was to put Selena in any position that might lead to hurting her.

"Keep going Nick." He heard Selena's fragile voice say.

"The owner, Dean, he offered me a job; a job much like my mother's. We keep secrets here Selena. We don't know what they are; in fact none of us are even allowed to read them. All we know is that they're important and they need to be hidden. It probably sounds stupid to you, like some type of game, but this is serious stuff Sel; people die."

Nick watched as he saw Selena's grip on the desk behind her tightened, "Part of this job is to protect these secrets, not just conceal them. There are other people out there who are just as powerful and just as strong that will do absolutely anything to get there hands on our information. Because of our age it's very easy for us to go undetected by the government. They think we're just some childish group that spends there nights rapping and break dancing." Nick chuckled under his breath.

"Nick," Selena's soft voice hummed, "who are the people that want these secrets?"

"They're people just like us," he answered.

"Do you know who they are?" Her eyes stared down at her feet, refusing to meet Nick's.

"A few of them, but we never know who all of them are." The room became suddenly quiet. Nick had said everything he needed to, now all he was waiting for was her reaction. More importantly he was hoping for her acceptance.

"Could you please take me home?" Selena finally spoke.

Nick stared at the beauty in front of him until she finally met his eyes, the fear in them were impossible to over look, "Sure."
