100 sled dogs slaughtered in Canada after post-Olympic tourist slump
A Canadian tour operator acknowledged ordering 100 sled dogs killed because of a slump in business after the Olympics, but a local council member says there is little that can be done because the killings took place outside city limits, local media report.

CKNW radio, which broke the story, says Worksafe British Columbia documents it has obtained show one worker has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder for carrying out the slaughters over a two-day period in April.

Lawyer Cory Steinberg, CKNW reports, represents the unidentified worker in Whistler. "It wasn't always a clean, one-shot kill," he says. "Inevitably, he ended up seeing and having to put the end to some horrific scenes."

In most cases, CKNW reports, the animals were shot more than once or had their throats slashed before they were thrown-- some still alive -- into what is described in the documents as a mass grave.

The company, identified in the documents as "Outdoor Adventures Whistler" did not contest the injury claim, CKNW reports, and even corrected the official account to say the worker killed 100 dogs, not 70 as he had stated

It will be a tragedy for humanity if the criminal(s) walk(s) away with only a short-term gaol sentence and fine. This crime deserves a far, far more severe punishment.
