In response to comment about arming Pakistan: It was not a simply matter of arming -- creating a collaboration with scientists in the USA and diverting technology including that of creating tititum via accelerators

They also armed Bin Laden, since he was against the Russians when they invaded Afghanistan. America, although in hindsight could have been better coordinated, took the attitude "The enemy of my enemy is my friend". Although it can come to be your downfall, in certain circumstances it is the most logical course of action. I accept your point, although @ the time Russia (The Soviet Union/USSR/CCCP) was a far greater threat.

Over the duration of the cold war, U.S. armed the middle east, looked the other way as dual use technologies were sent to Pakistan under the first President Bush and nuclear R&D went forward. What did we think would happen in Iran? We are now in a country on their border, we lobby to isolate them and we ignore countries such as Iran and Syria. It may not be good, but it is inevitable!
