@joms233 If you go up to effects and look for generate you should find advanced lightning. For other adobe after effects other than cs4, cs5 you may need to play with it, check all the effect options

Nice! How come my lightning just stayed and didn't disappear, it shows up the entire video... how do I stop it from doing it and use it at a certain time on the video?

@MrDillon66 i believe you didnt set the opcity markers at the right part in the clip. try putting the opacity to 100 and press the stop watch beside it right were you want it to show and were you want it to end just put opacity to 0. if it goes away a little early simply adjust the opacity the way you want it and it will be gone by the time ure opacity end point was placed in the clip. i hope this was help full.
