英名：Japanese giant salamander

日本（愛知県、大分県、岡山県、岐阜県、島根県、鳥取県、三重県、山口県、四国）に生息する日本固有種。

現存する世界最大の両生類。

最大全長150cm。

頭部は偏平で大きく、体には多数の小さな疣を持つ。

体側から四肢の後面にかけて皮膚の襞がある。

鋤骨歯列は浅いハの字型。

四肢は短かく後肢は5指性。

尾は著しく側偏する。

背面は一般に暗褐色で、不規則な黒色の斑紋を持つ。

飼育下では51年生存したという記録がある。

国の特別天然記念物に指定され、岐阜、岡山、大分の一部では生息地が天然記念物に指定されている。
