0609hrs on Monday 1st March 2010, and after arriving on the train seen at left, transport minister Steven Joyce cuts the ribbon to mark the opening of the New Lynn rail trench. Numerous dignitaries from local and central government were present, and in addition to the minister, was former Prime Minister Jim Bolger (Chairman of KiwiRail), Jim Quinn (CEO of KiwiRail), Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey, Auckland Mayor John Banks, heads of ARTA and around 200 other invited guests.

While the trench itself is now officially open, the station and transport centre will have their official opening later in the year.

  • $160m is KiwiRail's contribution - $300m is the actual cost including from local government, NZTA etc.
