De la ópera COSI FAN TUTTE- Jameos del Agua Lanzarote 29 de diciembre de 1990.Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria. Director: Gian Paolo Sanzogno.
Un'aura amorosa
Del nostro tesoro
Un dolce ristoro
Al cor porgerà;

This isn't his greatest, but we must remember that to sing a line as pure as that at 63 is an astounding achievement, one that just about no other tenor could emulate.

Obviously you say clever things... Lanza was a cool artist who gave something fresh and sincere through pictures and recordings. And Bocelli too. But i talk about real opera singers : and this is something very different. As you wrote : live audience, no microphone... I'm a baritone : i can sing in studio LE CID MASSENET "O souverain" which is a pure tenor aria... But if you ask me to sing it live, i say NO! This is the kind of diffence i talk about...

understand why you dislike Lanza, he does like 1/10 of what a real opera singer does, he basically just sings the arias and acts in scenes in front of 0 live audience and can stop and go, plus he sings most of the opera arias incorrectly. But he had more emotion in his voice then most singers can show combined. And he was highly praised by those aournd him, I highly doubt his v oicewas small. What is a small voice anyway, its about how it carries, size isn't always number one in importance.

If you are referring to the amoroSA (ah vowel at the end of the first phrase) and the del-lo at the beginning of thge next phrase, i hear more thinness then pitch issue. The thin sound isnt as centered on the pitch, this is in fact due to his elder age so i agree with you there. But I am not a fan of what you say about Lanza. Unless you had heard him live you do not know the size of his voice, he sounds as powerful on his records as any other voice. If you are a huge opera fan, I...

Florez is unbeatable in most Rossini, but he can be a bit shouty sometimes. Calleja is good, but sounds too much like Bjorling for him to interest me in his own right (no aspersions on his talent, mind).
I love Laurence Brownlee for the warmth and power in his voice. And recently I've discovered Topi Lehtipuu who is a beautiful singer.
As for Kauffman, we'll see...
