The US is trying to work out the best way to engage North Korea following Kim Jong-il's death.

They are trying to reach out to China that has strong influence in North Korea, US officials say Hillary Clinton, the secretary of state, and her Chinese counterpart share the same goals for North Korea during the transition.

However, US officials say that they do not expect immediate progress from a country still in mourning.

Al Jazeera's Rosiland Jordan reports from Washington DC on the challenges facing policy-makers in the US.

  • I just hope one day the Koreas can be one again at peace. My love to you Koreans.

  • U.S. is using NK's possession of WMD as a pretext (as always) to get into NK in efforts completely surround China. ATM, over 100K+ soldiers are deployed spanning SK to the Philippines. Once they set up military bases in NK and Myanmar they have more than a semi-circle.

  • My problem with Ron Paul has do with reducing military SuperPower, otherwise, I am favor reducing government. Do really need postal office, DVM etc...just let private companies take services with better customer service.

  • @Picklezorz Its not about the numbers, the numbers could be reduce by superior Aviation attacks & the World's Navy (US Navy). U.S Specs are more expierence, better trained, & with better health. Their Nukes are far behind (USSR era). Anyway, North Korea gets food aid from USA & South Korea. The problem is economical than danger.

  • Woman in the report is ignorant of the true of the matter, no offense, there has never been an end to the war in Korea, there was an armistice which was signed, which is a semi-cease fire state of open warfare, there wouldn't be a DMZ if there wasn't a war, I hope Americans understand that.

  • @NewUser21111

Translation: more freedom for capital; less freedom for labour.

  • That soldiers have been there since 1953? Must be old as shit by now.

  • @ScotteDio

Nope, North Korea has the most massive army in the world with 10 million soldiers. Also, it is a Nuclear Superpower, which means if the US tried to nuke them, they would send another straight back and vice versa. There won't be a war because both countries know that if they did they would both lose.

  • We "USA" should of wiped them out a long time ago

  • North Korea just want more American food supply, North Korea just use petty threats for food.
