Caccini - Ave Maria - Irina Arkhipova

Great Russian mezzo - passed away on Feb.11, 2010. RIP!

I had the privilege to hear that very piece live, being at her concert in then Leningrad in the early 80-s, and still remember vividly packed to full capacity the Great Hall of the Leningrad Philharmonic and tears on the faces of hundreds and hundreds of people (my face included), when the last note vanished in the air...

Shortly after I even wrote a small poem about that unforgettable experience (in my native Russian, of course).

Here it is:

Ave Maria, зал белостенный -
Юноши, девы, старцы почтенны...

Ave Maria, Шуберт и Верди -
Песня о жизни, песня о смерти.

Ave Maria, голос Органа,
Сердцу и сладко, и больно, и странно...

Ave Maria, голос Певицы,
Мука и нежность, слёзы на лицах.

Ave Maria, Бах и Каччини -
Боль без болезни, грусть без причины.

Ave Maria, слёзы на лицах...
Кажется, я научился молиться.

I first saw this great lady in a video of Carmen opposite Mario Del Monaco and her performance was riveting and her voice fabulous. Her Carmen ranks amongst the strongest ever. I then heard her in a variety of music and came to really admire and respect her. Great artist too little known in the West. R.I.P.

@gvetere Thanks again, for the info I'll take your advice. Like I said I'm trying to learn a little something about opera. I'm retired and have spent most of my life loving music, mostly popular. I've stumbled on to some beloved arias and now know that there is something in opera that has kept it alive for 500 yrs. I've watched a YouTube of Angela Gheorghiu singing "Un Bel Di Vedremo" on stage too many times to count and it gives me the chills every time.
