'Abroad Again: Stowe, Reading A Garden' (2007)

Stowe is the greatest of Enlightenment landscapes, an enclosed world of the utmost pomp. It is a physcial creation which requires both literary key and a knowledge of picturesque theory. It is also an antholgy of works by the greatest names of the eighteenth century: Vanbrugh, Gibbs, Kent, Adam, Soane

  • Wonderful stuff. Hadn't seen this one. Always find Meades so entertaining but wish I cou,d watch the stuff two or three time to 'get it'. Now I can! Thanks.

  • Very interesting and exiting walk throug the gardens with very worthful and intellectual commentaries and beautiful views on it ... but poor quality on screen. Is it possible to post an HD? If not, where can I get one? I'm very interested in getting one for my seminar paper.

  • Meades does go on a bit and occasionally he does something really odd to break things up a bit.

I spent 5 years there too

and the temples were crumbling but when the Trust helped out it all changed. It looks really good now.

  • Stoics are indeed fortunate!!!

Lol, this is making me want to go to Speech Day

  • I went to school here, had an amazing time.
