Robots learning to sing to each other

Movie showing the current version of the singing robots, which are being developed at ICCMR, University of Plymouth, UK. The robots, Tom, Dick and Harry evolve their own musical language by singing to each other. They were on display at the Science Museum's Dana Centre on 10 June 2009.

Those who do not actually work with robotics may not appreciate the difficulties behind the scenes to make something like this. Yeah, this hardware does not look so cool (but I like the punk clothing!) - there are better platforms out there. But what these robots seem to be doing is something quite different. They seem to be able to evolve some sort of language between them. This is not a toy anywaybut basic research: a significant progress. I look forward to further developments. Well done.

This is highly innovative stuff! Embodied cognition really has come of age with this. There's no knowing where this might go. Anyone else having visions of Mars Attacks!? ;-)

I appreciate that this doesn't look like much, but the philosophical implications could be pretty big, although much more thorough research would be required to make a decision, and a better understanding of robotics on my part.
