National level Judoka and MMA veteran Joel Gerson demonstrates a throw that is both beautiful and useful when going against a stiff armed opponent in a BJJ match. Usually in Judo, practitioners are penalized for being too stiff armed because it is stalling and it is too defensive. This "yoko tomoe nage" is a nifty solution of the situation.

  • I'm a Judo shodan and I must say this video is by far THE FINEST instruction on yoko tomoe nage I have ever seen. Generally speaking I don't like "Judo for BJJ" type videos because there are so many basics BJJ guys don't understand about Judo techniques that are typically glossed over but I feel Mr. Gerson does as good a job at explaining the basic technique. Of course, one would have to practice this over and over in a variety of situations (i.e. just do Judo) but the explanation is great!

  • Carlos Newton! Exactly!!!! I still say Hughes was out....

  • Great video in both senses, good instruction and coolest Uke ever! I started in Judo, did BJJ and back to Judo again, don´t know why some people still don´t want to cross train, is fun!

  • great detail. great video.

  • Sick video! Clear and detailed enough for me to actually learn the move. Nice job

  • Guys, trust me on this.....Joel Gerson is a phenom in BJJ and Judo. Check him out at the Tornto Invitational in 98 (or 99). I was blown away by this guy and I don't know him from a hole in the wall. If I remember right, I think he beat Jordan Damon and Jordan is another BJJ freak. Two guys that day were making the crowd "aww" in impressiveness.....Joel and Rumina Sato. Both stunned the crowds and other competitors with how good they are. I watched this video and his teaching looks phenomenal.

  • The ronin one of my fav fighters
