Les Poppys' best version I have found.
When I found alain02001's lyrics I couldn't help adding them.
Thank you alain02001.

  • I like the 1973 version with Gerald Meunier best. There's also a great Debuddys version where the lead parts are split (youtube aswell). Yannick Noah and the Enfoires have also done greta versions

  • @1966csj If one ignores the meaning of the lyrics and rates only the musical niceness of the song I guess there are a lot of prettier versions of this song. For me this is not a love song or dance song. It is an anguished cry of frustration of injustice. I believe this Poppies version has the emotional expression that belongs with these lyrics.

btw Thank you for introducing me to DeBuddys, I had not heard of them before.

  • @VivaYoungTalent Yes I agree but my reference to great versions doesn't refer only to musical niceness. The 1973 version in Dusseldorf is extremely heartfelt as is the Enfoires version (the Enfoires are a collection of French artists who do big charity concerts every year ) If the songs weren't presented attractively and in a musically sound way, you wouldn't want to listen to the words. The examples need to be credible and musical because that's what attracts the audience in the first place.

  • @1966csj I agree the Dusseldorf version is very credible but I think Berlin kicked it up a notch. On the other hand if all you want to do is attract audience. Why do this song at all? Just stick to the pretty and cutesy and be done with it. As it was in Berlin they did several other of their cutesy and pretty songs then closed with this "in your face" powerful performance. For that I respect them for having the balls to lay this one on the line.

  • @VivaYoungTalent Didn't say all I want to do is attract audience. I suggested that without something musically sound you wouldn't attract an audience. I have also seen some lousy versions of this song but I wouldn't judge the impact the lyrics have on people just because the song was interpreted differently by different groups at different times. The youngsters I'm teaching this song to have been enthralled by the different versions but understand the words and context fully.

  • @1966csj All I am saying is that, for myself, any interpretation that presents this song with smiles and gay frivolity just isn't right. I didn't say there are no other reasonably good interpretations. I just think this one hits the mark best. It is musically sound and is delivered with the heartfelt emotion deserving of the lyrics. I would love to discover another that strikes my sole harder.
