This video is part of the Technical Enrolment Project of the five English language CEGEPs (known as community colleges everywhere else in North America) in Quebec, Canada. It was produced to encourage high school students and their parents to consider CEGEP Computer Science Technology as a possible career path.

  • Ya right..."it's not going away, that's for sure" many companies are closing in Canada and send all their work in Philippines, Thailand, etc. You're right about the market expanding...but companies are more interested paying an guy from Thailand at 4$/hour rather than an Canadian at 24$/h

Difference between cegep degree and university? it's in the salary

  • @TheZbug Small and medium sized businesses cannot work with offshore companies for the day to day work that is necessary. The job markey for our graduates are primarily in just such companies. So while a telecom company may outsource the programming of their next big router or switch, the businesses you see in the malls and in the industrial parks alongside highways will always hire local companies to develop the software they need or maintain their web presence..

  • @TheZbug I've been in the field in an Engineering position for 10 years with a CEGEP degree. We outsource work but only what we can. A lot of (good) outsourcing firms from India ask $20-25/hour per person! Speaking of pay, you are right: The starting CEGEP salary is lower than a starting University grad. It depends on the company and the person of course, but most catch up on salary within 2 years. We are hiring computer science grads like crazy too; not enough grads to meet our needs...

  • Doing a three year CEGEP degree will make you a computer TECHNICIAN. If you want to be a computer SCIENTIST, you need a PhD. So CEGEP computer science is a bit of a misnomer. However, the IT field is one where skills matters the most and if you can do the job, then it doesn't really matters what degree you have. Although I'm just a CEGEP graduate (to be), I'm doing the same job a university graduate would do, because I was able to demonstrate that I can do it!
