It's a universal truth that dogs are man's best friend, but they're pretty darn loyal to their own as well. Case in point: this tear-inducing video, via the website Jezebel, showing a dog, shivering and disoriented, remaining loyally by the side of a stricken fellow canine amid the devastation of the Japanese tsunami.
Here is an English translation of the voiceover exchange between the two reporters in the clip (translation courtesy of Toshiyuki Kitamura):

We are in Arahama area. Looks like there is a dog. There is a dog. He looks tired and dirty. He must have been caught in the tsunami. He looks very dirty.

He has a collar. He must be someone's pet. He has a silver collar. He is shaking. He seems very afraid.

Oh, there is another dog. I wonder if he is dead.

Where?

Right there. There is another dog right next to the one sitting down. He is not moving. I wonder. I wonder if he is alright.

The dog is protecting him.

Yes. He is protecting the dog. That is why he did not want us to approach them. He was trying to keep us at bay.

I can't watch this. This is a very difficult to watch.

Oh. Look. He is moving. He is alive. I am so happy to see that he is alive.

Yes! Yes! He is alive.

He looks to be weakened. We need to them to be rescued soon. We really want them rescued soon.

Oh good. He's getting up.

It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It's just amazing that they survived through this all.

  • @Lenzkid10 Because the humans know that things are going to be okay when help is approaching. Animals don't have the slightest clue of what just occurred, they are very frightened...thats when they can be the most dangerous.

  • If these were two humans, I would expect the camera man to put down the camera and help the humans. Why is it different for animals?

  • Oh very sad but so glad that both dogs are ok - My heart goes out to you all in Japan God Bless xx

  • Good news. I wish them well.

Yahoo News has reported, both dogs have been rescued and are being treated:

If you feel the need to help:

    google lifewithdogs

    For USA disasters:

    google noahswish

  • @KHRLambo who's to say it wasnt?

  • What im sure u all mean to say is that these creatures dont wait for a disaster or for someone to be hurt to love them.. but when it does happen every fibre in their body shows that this is the way they felt all along.. their love is not intermittent or opportunistic.

  • I wish humans could be more like these two dogs. The world would be a better place <3

Good luck doggies <3 I wish I could take you into my home and give you tons of hugs and kisses :(

  • They are so loyal. How anyone can hurt a animal is beyond me. Thanks to all those that are helping rescue all the animals in Japan. I know you are waiting for the ok to go into Fukushima as it is not declared safe with Radiation treat of the Nuclear Plant. You are doing a great job. THANK YOU. Recy Australia
