Having left Egypt and wrestled power from the hands of the Directoire, Napoleon once again faced war with Austria. Looking to surprise his enemies, Napoleon boldly crossed the Alps, taking the Austrians by surprise. However, Napoleon was about to be surprised himself, as the Austrian general Melas suddenly marched from Alessandria and attacked the spread-out French at Marengo. Holding the vital right flank was the Consular Guard...

  • You placed the camera in a very boring vincle.

  • I love that march !

  • Read all the accounts by all means, but what makes the Austrian accounts more trustworthy, and what did Soulès, Kellermann, Eugène, Krettly, Quiot say that confirms the account in the Osprey?

Did Petit say who told him? It sounds odd that "propaganda triumphed until 2000" while battles like Eylau and Essling have always been disputed by historians.

  • Where is it possible to find Petit's account? And what is the Osprey based on if there are no accounts?

Propaganda claims on both sides doubtless exaggerated events, but there is no reason to think the Austrians were more trustworthy.

I said a triangle because the "clump" would have looked like one, based on similar improvised formations during battles of the period.

  • One of the accounts I read was Hollin's version in the book in the Osprey series that you quoted.

The square probably looked more like a triangle, but the point is that the guardsmen kept sufficient nerve to fall back as a group around their flag, including according to the author you were using as a source.

What was the name of the "man who did not see the event"?

  • I'm taking my facts from period accounts, and I wouldn't recommend using wikipedia as a source.

  • well wikipedia says the french gun had 1 shot per minute whereas the prussian gun had 3 per minute

but maybe do you know more than wikipdeia, after all you name is "NapoleonCalland"

  • Hollins' figures don't add up. The Consular Guard counted 800 grenadiers and about 100 light infantry (the nucleus of the future 1st Regiment of foot chasseurs of the Guard).

And yes, apparently they were jumped by Frimont, but they managed to keep sufficient nerve to form a square and retreat around their flag. Only an elite unit could have managed that, and it's all the more to the Guard's credit.

So as Hollins confirms what I just said, the propaganda was true.

  • 3 bullets per minute

  • actually those grenadiers only shot 1 bullet per minute in the real battles.

Imagine how boring it would be on a video game
