This piece is Psalm 51, but first set to music by Allegri around 1630. It is one of the finest and most popular examples of renaissance polyphony. It is often heard in Churches of the apostolic Christian tradition on Ash Wednesday, immediately following Shrove (or pancake) Tuesday, marking Christ's return to Jerusalem. Beautifully performed here by The Sixteen, listen out for the simplicity, humility and reverence.

  • Can we all shut up and listen? Wherever this comes from, be it god or man, this song makes me openly weep because of how beautiful it is. Stop tarnishing this song with debates about what it's inspired by and just sit back and adore it.

  • Incredible, sends shivers down your spine.

  • This music is so beautiful I can't stop listening to it.

  • @mcrkid22 I totally agree.

  • Love the prayerful and deliberate pauses. I have sang for over 30 years in choral groups and one thing I have learned is that less is more. Fewer people. Look at this group: 16 voices, all quality and pure voices with no other voices to dilute them.

  • Thank you.

  • We did this piece at St Patrick's Cathedral for Ash Wednesday this year. It is one of those pieces of music that I can completely lose myself in. I swear that I'm on the verge of an out-of-body experience when I hear this piece.

  • @MrNoneofthem I do apologise! I guess I was seeing beards, tatoos and piercings in my mind when I wrote the comment. All stereotypes of course, but it's hard to reconcile those images with this music. I applaud your excellent taste in music!

  • @shodrip Hey! I am a metalhead too. Do not insult us by classifying us with these 6 whoever they are. My liking of metal does not mean that I do not appreciate this perfect work of Allegri's. In fact, I think Miserere Mei is the best song ever created by man and I doubt that there will be a better one. Do not judge people by their one aspect, please.

  • We're singing this at my school for Ash Wednesday...can't wait. I'm practicing half to death to try and get that high C in the solo quartet. *sigh* Still - astonishingly beautiful, and a lot of fun to sing. :)

  • How did 6 metalheads wind up watching this video?
