the reels strong enough, looks like a penn 12/0,might be a 9/0 same thing we use for land based shark fishing, it has more than enough drag for a halibut, but if you lock all the way down with out a harness,well have fun going swimming lol

ive had spinning reels get close to smoking but putting some fresh water on it fixes the whole problem

So, how does the story end? Did the guy lose the fish, or get it?
The problem may've been the drag setting was too low , or maybe it's that the reel is not strong enough for the fish the guy had. As soon as the line was being pulled out fast, I would've tightened the drag as much as possible ; letting the fish be able to take out line, but slowly. A good and suitably strong reel would permit this.

Not a halibut. You probably had a fish on the hook that was eaten by a shark or seal.

hahahah, seriously tho, ive never seen a reel smoke like that... fishermen talk about it like its a thing to say... but wow... this is just ridiculous
