The University of Edinburgh Composers' Orchestra performing Oliver Singleton's 'Zweig'. December 2nd 2010, conducted by Professor Nigel Osborne. For more information visit http://www.composersorchestra.com/

Oliver Singleton is studying towards a Masters in Composition, having recently graduated with a BMus Hons from the University of Edinburgh. During his time in Edinburgh Oliver has had the pleasure of directing 'Rudsambee - Company of Singers', a diverse and exciting a cappella choir and choral and vocal music often influence his compositions.

'Zweig' is a short piece for orchestra, the initial inspiration for which came from the works and life of Stefan Zweig; particularly his novel 'Verwirrung der Gefühle' (Confusion of Feelings). The music attempts to express in some way the unusual and delicate relationship between certain of Zweig's characters who, despite an intense emotional attraction, never seem to communicate satisfactorily; thus the sweet dissonances of their often painful interactions. This is set against the pulsing and out-of-focus backdrop of responsibility, routine and an oppressive yet seductive intellectual mind.
