Typography installation project. Flagler College Fall 2010.
Our assignment was to choose and design a word that says something about design. Next was to come up with a concept, choose a correlating object to our concept to then develop into a pixel to fill and install our designed word with in a public space.
We chose the word Overlooked because design is everywhere and often disregarded, unappreciated. OVERLOOKED by the masses. People drink their coffee without thinking about the time that went into the design of the cup or the logo on their shirt or the billboard on their drive to work.
We chose a pretzel as our object (two pretzels facing eachother as a pixel) because not only does the pretzel have an interesting design that is overlooked but people treat food in general much like they do design: Consume and destroy.
To fully demonstrate our concept, we installed it on the beach; crawling with your everyday consumers as well as with seagulls of which, once fully installed, were to observe our design (that we spent so much time and effort on) and then greedily consume it with the same primitive sense of entitlement and disregard that many people consume design.
The whole project including design, printing, cutting, setup, installation and video editing was roughly 35hours and 3200 pretzels!
