Investigation concludes North Korean missile sunk the Cheonan killing 46

South Korea accused North Korea of firing a torpedo that sank a naval warship in March, killing 46 sailors in the country's worst military disaster since the Korean War.

Investigators said evidence overwhelmingly proved a North Korean submarine fired a homing torpedo that caused a massive underwater blast that tore the Cheonan into two on March 26.

President Lee Myung-bak vowed "stern action" for the provocation following the release of the results.

Fifty-eight sailors were rescued from the frigid Yellow Sea waters near the Koreas' maritime border, but 46 perished.

North Korea called the results a "fabrication" and warned that any punishment would trigger war. They also requested an inspection team verify the evidence.

The current investigators, including experts from South Korea, the US, Britain, Australia and Sweden, claim pieces recovered at the sinking site "perfectly" matched the schematics of a North Korean torpedo.

"Based on all such relevant facts and classified analysis, we have reached the clear conclusion that the Republic of Korea's Cheonan was sunk as a result of an external underwater explosion caused by a torpedo made in North Korea. The evidence points overwhelmingly to the conclusion that the torpedo was fired by a North Korean submarine. There is no other plausible explanation."

"We confirmed that a few small submarines and a mother ship supporting them left a North Korean naval base in the West Sea 2-3 days prior to the attack and returned to port 2-3 days after the attack. Furthermore, we confirmed that all submarines from neighbouring countries were either in or near their respective home bases at the time of the incident."

"Since the serious event called 'the Cheonan' incident occurred, we believe that we can look over whether the six-party talks can be held or not after we take proper measures about this serious security related situation. We believe China also understands our stance on this."

South Korean and US officials said they were considering a variety of options, ranging from UN Security Council action to additional US penalties.
