Columbia, November 15, 1975 - The week after Kansas handed OU it's first loss in three years, the Sooners were struggling. Mizzou led 27-20 late in the game, and OU faced 4th and 1 from their own 29-yard line. Barry Switzer told QB Steve Davis to make sure Little Joe got the ball. Davis pitched to Washington, who cut between two blocks, broke two tackles, and made an unbelieveable 71-yard touchdown run. The Sooners had to go for the win to make sure they had a shot at the Big 8 Championship, and again, Little Joe's number was called. Washington took the pitch, was hit at the 2-yard line, then leaped and fell on the goal line. OU won 28-27 and went on to the 1975 national title.

  • Joe Washington was, quite simply, the greatest running back to ever play the game of college football.

  • WOW! I too remember listening to this on the radio. We lost to Kansas the week before and it felt like the whole season was going into the toilet, but that touchdown is still the most memorable one for me anytime Joe's name is mentioned. I think he had hurt himself in practice before the season started and he just didn't seem the same as in '73 & '74. It seemed Elvis Peacock was getting the ball more, though Joe was still returning kicks. I think he ran one back on Colorado (or Pitt?).

  • Remember this also. Joe had a near career ending rookie season injury I believe it was the preseason.

  • Do you remember the picture of Joe Washington in sports illustrated when he was at Oklahoma? He was leaping over a would be tackler. That was one of the greatest action photo's ever. I remember back in the seventh grade I rated Joe as the best runningback in football. I still believe he was the best runner in football. Had Joe gibbs had him or Minnesota or the rams in those days he would be close to Jim Browns rushing record. With a line he was unstoppable.

  • Longtime fan from ok. I still have an OU program that was autographed by the 75 team when i was at a practice one day. Got to meet and talk with all the greats, Joe, Billy, Steve Davis, Tinker Owens, Jimbo Elrod and of course the Great Selmon bros, Switzer, Elvis etc. Also had autographed red/white football but played with it as a kid and lost all the signatures...Dumb huh...As a kid u do stupid things...At least i kept the program along with my comics lol.....Ty for the video and memories.

  • Joe Washington,Steve Davis,Tinker Owens, the Wishbone and Mike Trepps.God bless the 'good ole days'.

  • I remember these days, like they where yesterday. I was in the ninth grade and also a wishbone running back, with great skills like Lil Joe, my Idol. I would watch Oklahoma games when ever they where on tv and highlight films on Sunday on the Barry Switzer show. Then go out and emulate Joe's moves when I played. I wanted to be the best, so in my mind it was just me and Joe. Barry Sanders came later, he was younger.

  • Also the loss to KU was OU's first home

defeat in nearly 4 years,I do believe!!!
