This video shows the highway between Red Deer, Alberta and Edmonton, Alberta. The highway is called the Queen Elizabeth II (QE2) highway, and received that title after our province's centennial in 2005.

It was taken on a road trip while going to a trade show in Edmonton. The week before we had received several snow storms followed by around a week of very cold weather. When we went to Edmonton, the temperature was around -30C.

I thought that this clip was fairly representative of winter scenes and winter driving conditions after a blizzard. The roads seen are still not completely clear - several snow plows can be seen in the clip. And in the video many winter weather conditions are visible including some ice fog (which was lifting), and the hoar frost on the trees - especially as we got closer to Edmonton.

I also included a quick shot of the Leduc no. 1 oil derrick. This oil derrick was the drilling platform that struck oil in Leduc area in 1949. The discovery of the oil reserves ushered in a new era for the province and changed the entire economy of the region. The derrick is now located at an information office/rest stop just south of Edmonton.

The music used is Jimmy Reed Highway by Omar Kent Dykes (of Omar and the Howlers) and Jimmie Vaughan (of the Fabulous Thunderbirds and big brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan).

This was filmed on Nov. 19, 2010 at 20x real time.

  • Great video!

I want to do one in a similar way the next time I go to Red Deer or Calgary, so far I've only done a few local trips, but I still found them interesting! I kept looking for myself in this video because I was on the highway that day!

  • @QuanticChaos1000 Thanks! Were you headed the same way?

  • What a good day for people freeing up the passing lane! Looks like you made great time

  • @BrassSnacks As I recall we did. Rare is the day that people move over like that - today however, was not one of them. :)

  • worst road to drive on in winter lol.

  • @DieselSmoke92 True enough! :) My least favorite section for poor winter driving is actually between Bowden and Airdrie.

  • @canadianentropy It would have depended on the time you went through, I went North from just South of Leduc to Edmonton and back that day in my truck, I think I was hauling a car, but I can't remember...

  • @canadianentropy Yeah i bet. Highway 2 has always been bad for winter driving. I drove there to the Edmonton International Airport and it was so icy i counted 25 cars in the ditch. Apperently there ended up being 200 per day lol.

  • @canadianentropy Sure!

  • @NorthWestVideos Thanks!
