The next generation of computers may run off the 'spin' of electronics instead of their charge.
Researchers writing in science journal, Nature, have made use of spin-polarised electrons at room temperature for the first time.
Spintronics manipulates electronic spin to carry data, but up until now this has only ever been achieved at a low temperature.
Not only has this now been pulled off at room temperature, it was also demonstrated in silicon the material that underpins the computer industry.
This could mean that computers use far less energy in the future when relying on spintronics. And that in turn means taking the technology to a commercial level.
The next challenge will be overcoming the problem of heating just as electronics is faced with as individual devices get smaller and smaller.
Maybe finally Windows will be completely recoded!
