It can be very costly to maintain a home, especially when professionals have to be called in for repairs. Few people have the skills to do their own home repairs.

Dozens of low- and middle-income homeowners and prospective first-time home buyers in Queens are now learning valuable skills they need to repair their own homes in a free, innovative Home Maintenance Workshop organized by two non-profits, the Housing Partnership Development Corporation and the Margert Community Corporation.

The women and men in the Workshop are empowered by achieving the self sufficiency to repair their own homes, which enhances the value of their largest asset. They also gain the knowledge to better understand the extent of the repair work required, and to evaluate costs, when contractors and other professionals must be hired for larger projects.

Home Maintenance Workshop students receive instruction in replacing and repairing drywall, installing light switches, receptacles and ceiling fans, securely mounting light fixtures, installing decorative moldings, repairing/replacing toilets, sinks and faucets, unclogging drains, installing burst proof washing machine water lines; paint walls, ceilings and moldings, installing ceramic tile on walls and floors, and making their homes more energy efficient.

Home Maintenance Workshop graduates receive certificates confirming their newly-learned skills.

Classes meet eight consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the St. Gertrude's Gymnasium at 307 Beach 37th Street, Far Rockaway. The Workshop is a beginners' course to learn the basics. All materials and tools are provided without charge.
