Baltimore's Civil Rights Heritage Read's Drug Store chain maintained a strict policy of racial segregation at their lunch counters.
On January 20, 1955, a group of Morgan State student activists including Dr. Helena Hicks, and others staged a "sit-in" demonstration at the Read's Drug Store at Howard and Lexington Streets. On January 14, 2012, Dr Helena Hicks, Sharon Black & Marchers for Jobs & Justice confronted the Baltimore City Police consisting of about 12 Police cars & 2 dozen city policemen at the former site of Read's Drug store at Howard and Lexington Streets.
