Avon Theater's 70th Anniversary!
The Avon Theatre presented "The Avon. The Red Carpet. You." - its 2nd annual fundraising gala - on the night of the Oscars® at the theatre located on 272 Bedford Street in Downtown Stamford, CT on Sunday, February 22. The gala celebrated 1939: the greatest year in film and the birth of the Avon. Guests in black-tie and elegant gowns had their pictures taken on the Avon's red carpet and entered the historic theater as searchlights lighted the sky and theater facade. Inside, guests were treated to lavish hors d'oeuvres and drinks as they voted on their choices for Oscar® winners. In the main theatre, a pre-Oscar® live program featured a pianist playing memorable film themes with attendees' Red Carpet arrival pictures projected on the screen interspersed with pictures of movie stars on the Red Carpet, a film retrospective of 1939's historic moments and legendary movies, a comedian, live auction including passes to the Cannes Film Festival, and a special tribute to the theatre's 70th birthday by a chorusline of professional dancers performing as the Avonettes. The program was followed by a spectacular live, high definition broadcast of the Oscars® from Hollywood. Chair of the gala was Deborah Royce of Greenwich, CT, who with her husband Chuck Royce, are co-founders of the Avon. Chuck Royce purchased the historic cinema in 2000 and soon thereafter began a huge restoration project which was overseen by himself, Deborah and the other co-founders, John and Olivia Farr of Bedford, NY. Executive producers of the gala were Pamela Lewanda and Bob Neiman, who serve on the theater's board and advisory board. Both reside in Stamford, CT.
I reeeeeeeeeeally want to go to the Oscar Gala, ... but that's $350 a person. Forget it; that's over 1/3 the price of the $900 stroller I am obsessing over »
My these are the major preoccupations of the residents of the fair city of Stamford? Oh, and of course, Greenwich. Perhaps they havent noticed that the other half is not quite so fortunate. 600,000 lose their jobs every month. Millions have lost their homes. As Marie said let them eat cake, but then she must have lost her head
