This is a quick test-run of the motor for a 1960s (second generation) Federal SD-10 siren. I collect and restore these big, loud behemoths. This is similar to those which were installed in Los Angeles for the Cold War nuclear bomb warning system in the 1950s. This siren is still in remarkable physical condition, and as evidenced by this test, the motor is also just fine!
are the old siren still there at los angeles?.

A friend of mine has a 1-1/2hp large frame totally enclosed Fairbanks-Morse 3-phase motor which was made in Kansas City in the 1940s. It was one of the first mass produced electric motors with permanently lubricated ball bearings. The motor was originally belted to a conveyor on a grain elevator, and later ran an air compressor before being put in storage for five years because the owner thought it was defective. Two years ago I wired it up an it ran like new.

They sound soooo much better without the metal band around it, I think that sheetmetal band holds it back soundwise.....

Nice!
At firsthought it was flat on the bed so less air intake to produce lessound.
Love the "sour" perfect fourth musical interval.
