The talents threaten and taunt are necessary for a tank companion like alistar to do very well at tanking. Otherwise enemies will just charge at the character doing the most damage.

For rogues and warriors its best to stick with a single weapon proficiency for the specific character. Although for mages you can mix and match spells as you please without much problem.
