When your breakup ends because a man tells you he needs space, do not misunderstand what it means. Most women delude themselves by thinking he has fallen so deeply in love he is scared. This opinion may be supported by well meaning friends and family members, but it is usually not true. You feel that given a little time he will be back and ready to make a life long commitment. The cold hard truth is that when a man needs space, he usually wants to end the relationship. It is just what he considers a more compassionate way of doing it. It is not because he has fallen too deeply in love with you, but something has changed in the way he feels about you. Men can be more sensitive than you might think. Most of them try to act like superman, but inside he might not be so sure of himself. If he gets his feelings hurt, he will sulk off someplace to be alone.
You might have jokingly criticized him or done something that unintentionally hurt his feelings. If you feel that might be the case, then your instincts will tell you to call him and apologize, but it will only make matters worse. You have to respect his wishes and give him the space he asked for. Some thing you said or did, might not be the reason at all. You might have been a little too attentive and he felt smothered. In that case you certainly would not want to smother him more by staying in his face.
There is also the chance that you might have become intimate with him too soon. If this is a fairly new relationship, sleeping with him too soon, might have made him feel that it was not really a relationship at all. If you pursue him he will do his best to avoid you. It will be up to you to do some deep soul searching and find the real reason he needed space because only you know what happened.
But, no matter what the reason, you will need time to come up with the reason and he will need time to sort things out. When some time has elapsed, you can contact him and ask him if he would be willing to meet you for a face to face talk.
