6 Dec 2010-In blizzard conditions, the M74 was gridlocked with accidents and stranded vehicles leaving motorists taking hours to travel just a short distance. Some were left with the prospect of spending the night on the roads.
Stewart Stevenson, the Scottish transport minister, was forced to apologise for failing to act more quickly in the face of the worst cold snap in early winter for nearly 50 years. He admitted the suddenness and intensity of the snow and ice had caught the authorities by surprise.
Stevenson resigned 5 days later.
