This movie is inspired in 2 things:
Religious people: C'mon, only a retarded religion would think that 2012 would be the last day of humanity. Ask your grand parents about it and since when they already started to talk about this.
God will comeback to earth: Did he called you about it?
What this movie portrait is that if the humans don't care for each other or the planet earth (manteinance of the environment, etc), we will all end the humanity faster.

The effects are very good for an all CG movie, even with the stereotypical explosions all over. As for the rest of the movie, I can only say that it felt like one long, and massive guilt trip. Scenes where the children are killed still greatly disturb me and the film leaves me feeling empty inside. The story itself just feels ripped out of some cutrate SyFy made for TV movie, only less painful to watch.
