It is rare. The flight I mentioned was a once in a lifetime occurrence. I've had bumpy flights since then but nothing that extreme.

Severe Turbulence: large, abrupt changes in altitude/attitude, large variations in airspeed, aircraft may be momentarily out of control. Occupants are forced violently against straps, unsecured objects disappear, walking is impossible.
IMO This looks more like a stabilized approach to me. Extreme control movements are when the control hits the stops and you still need more....
