Well St John's is a very committed performance but Winchester's is almost faultless in every way...simply stunning and I can't imagine a better version (unless of course Andrew Lumsden's Winchester was also in the running!). From when do the two recordings date?

Winchesterare really polished , vibrant, dramatic, superb intonation and diction also (to my ear) better vocal forces. Negatives? Non,except that whereas St J's are just slightly sub Winchester standard in all the above, they still have that intensity of feeling, total involvement and utter passion that draws me into the heart of the piece and sends shivers down the spine ."O Clemens....etc" at 2.45 words fail me..! If I had to choose....??

Both are very beautiful, but still I prefer the Winchester Cathedral choir version ...

I would like to thankyou for posting such wonderful and well chosen/presented clips from choirs composed of boys and men. I worry about their demise. Kepp up the good work. I co-direct a Polish Cathedral Choir - composed entirely of boys - although there is now a separate girls' choir - not the same.

beatiful
Despite the fact that Winchester Choir is indeed more polished, has brigther sopranos I have to admit that St. John's Choir interpretation is more beautiful to me in terms of treating word and harmony. Their harmonic and phrasal leanings are so emotional, more touching to me. They kiss each word :) Can't find more comparison because English is not my native language. As with every music... perfection or inner truth... motion of soul...
