Being a laser guy... from a way back anyway, you need another axis if you want to get anything useful out of this. Typical scanners are paired X and Y, and your third channel would either be blanking, color mod, or some other effect from a lens or diffraction grating.
Still nice work hacking the drive, although I'm curious on your method of driving the stepper motor.
