Didn't he basically pioneer the animatronic?
There have been "puppets" dating back to the silent era but I am not aware of others in that field prior to the 1990's. At least, not at the level Stan ultimately reached. For a long time, it was either stop-motion animation or really terrible alternatives like men in dinosaur costumes.
Rick Baker, Dick Smith and other were inventive geniuses for makeup but Stan took it further and made the "working prop" something more sophisticated.

Ever since I was little and wanted to start making movies, I wanted to do things like tour Stan Winston studio. Quite revolutionary for over 30 years of cinema!
There should be a traveling exhibit of his work:
"Stan Winston: Machines, Monsters & Magic"
