Xenogears No Upgrade - Calamity

Here's where the challenge takes off, and boy there's really no transition phase. I'm throwing some optional restrictions on there: No re-fueling and no Chu Chu.

Refueling isn't much problem because your Gears get restored for free when you enter the bridge of the Yggdrasil from the world map. In this dungeon, you can encounter Nomad Fix Bots, confused little enemies which will either attack you, restore some fuel, or repair your HP. Finally, when Balthasar fixes your Gears as part of the storyline, they are completely restored. I just made sure to get from Balthasar's place to Calamity without taking any damage or using any Fuel.

I'm not using Chu-Chu for obvious reasons.
1.) It breaks the challenge
2.) It needs to die.
If you don't know what Chu-Chu is, trust me ignorance is bliss.

For the actual boss fight, normal attacks don't make a dent on him with your weak engines, so I raised both combatants to level 22 to learn their fourth Deathblow. Bart has an edge over Fei with the Iron GWhip found in the cavern. Wild Smile will cause Calamity to miss almost every time with his attacks, except for his missiles which always hit for about 450 damage, so I just had to hope he didn't use that attack too much.

The first attempt at this fight, I won but Fei died, and I wasn't satisfied with that. This was the second attempt.

Calamity has 2500 HP.

this fight is not hard if u just buy the goddamn parts from old man bal. u have the money unless u ran from every battle. why does everyone say this battle is hard i beat this game when i was in 8th grade in 1999. my all time favorite game though.

Probably because some people don't buy the engine upgrade, not realizing that engines determine attack power as well as fuel. You really need the extra attack to overcome Calamity's defense.

But yeah, if you upgrade then he's cake.

I loved this game, and yet remember almost nothing about it. It's about time to dust off the old PSX and break out the Xenogears... either that or emulate, as I do own the game and thus it would be legal to emulate. Is there a working and good PSX emulator? I'm not looking for ISOs, I have the game, I just want something to play it.

Emulators themselves are perfectly legal, so no worries.

You make no sense at all. Why would you spend the eons of time it must have taken to power level your characters to level 22 in that cave in lieu of upgrading the gear equipment? What is the point?

It takes maybe 1-2 hours to level up to 22 in the cave. And you answered your own question: the point is to beat the game without upgrades, what's so difficult to understand about that?

@desryu it's weird to get a reply to this comment after 3 years but I just recently had to replace this game by buying it off ebay because the CD broke in half. And well this is one of my favorite PS games of all time.

@jinggo78 If it makes you feel any better I leveled Fei and Elly high enough to get the xx combo in the forest at the beginning of the game. The only reason i did this is my game was hung at the part where the ygg zooms in on weltall on top of the Aveh transport.
