Ms. Ferrier's voice was one of the most unforgetable in the last century.

    Dear lady.

It has just been suggested that my previous comment about your YouTube picture was insulting. I assure you that it was not intended that way.

But even at 3x magnification, it still looks to me like a duck, although I now think it may be a detail from a painting. So I am going to ask you what exactly it is.

Jedenfalls, I do most earnestly apologise if I offended you.

The picture identifying DameMitHermelin still looks like a duck to me - even at 3x magnification. Though now I study it again, it looks like the detail from a painting. I certainly did not intend it to be insulting. I might even write to apologise if there is the possibility that she was offended.

But thank you for determining which comments are inane and unnecessary. It must be a great responsibility.

As for your comment about languages for singing in.

    - I like French, and I like the great tradition of chanson. It is a pity that they can't sing their language like they speak it.

    - My German is very weak, and as I said in my original comment, their (pop) songs are full of "zusammenhangslos Quatsch".

Italian sounds beautiful, but I have no idea what it all means.

Russian sounds horrible - full of Zschnye sounds.

    - The language of Shakespeare has a lot to recommend it..

I didn't object to your photograph, just that you made a snide comment about writing to a duck and that you couldn't make out the photograph. This seemed particularly inappropriate in view of your blank "photo". I'm sure you would enjoy a song about dysenterty; perhaps more than this song, which is one of Schubert's most beautiful. It's sad that you want to detract and distract from it with inane and unnecessary commenrts.

    (1) I think a song about dysentery is long overdue. I am only sorry that the idea did not occur to Schubert. Sorry about Urbrigens. I was aiming for the "e", rather than trying to fabricate the darned umlaut over the "u", You will notice that "r" is the adjacent key.

And I did not write "urbringens". Look more carefully. We are all capable of typos, it seems. As for my "ghostly" photograph, it looks remarkably like yours. So I do not understand your objection to it.

What a silly comment (almost as silly as the one about dysentery)! The vast majority of great songs (Lieder, which is the german word for songs) were written to German texts. English is one of the worst languages for singing, except perhaps in pop music. French, Italian, German and Russian are all better. And the word you meant to write is "übrigens" not "urbringens". What about your photograph? Are you a ghost?
