  • Show me a country whose military doesn't complain about funding and I'll show you a military dictatorship.

  • @Kampfer1445

Maybe more like A Danish navy more our size of country with ships that cover the Atantic area to Greenland extra same sort of seas

  • mcra774061

Ofcourse the Navy needs more and maybe bigger ships but built within budget that can be afforded. The Emer class have sreved the Navy well they were cheap to build and have proved themselves. A ship is a plateform a bigger version of the Emer hull with modern accom and layout, heavier and armament and the lastest gear, we cannot go back to when I was about to the the Navy when we had a Navy with no ships Ships phased in at about 3 year intervals which would give 30 year life span

  • Helping ships in distress can be taken care of by the Coast Guard with tugboats; it is not a navy's primary duty. I agree that the actual needs of the Navy must take into account Ireland's situation; for example amphibious assault ships are pointless. However the Navy is a branch of the armed forces and its purpose is to fight wars first and foremost. Concentrating any branch of the armed forces primarily on auxiliary tasks such as humanitarian aid will greatly erode its fighting ability.

  • Also it makes sense to tackle the problems at hand and prepare for the most likely scenarios, rather then wasting resources on the least likely and worst case scenario such as war.

It's stupid to have a warship that can only offer minimal assistance to ships in distress that it may encounter every day that is only useful for something that may never happen. Rather then have a ship that is able to offer proper assistance but have less firepower.

  • There's plenty of reasons why they don't have what they need.

But the two main reasons are:

1: No money. Irish Navy patrol times have been cut considerably in the budget. Not only that but the 2 MRV's they were looking to purchase are now out of the question. They don't even have the money to replace current ships that are already past their service life.

    AND

2: Nobody in the government cares. And hardly any of the population are aware or would even care if they did.

  • You are dead on. There is no reason why Ireland, a wealthy island nation should not have a navy comparable to the Royal Dutch Navy, for example. However at a minimum Irish warships should have armament enabling them to sink ships, defend themselves from air attack and deter aggression. Fast attack missile boats are a must for the Irish Naval Service.

  • @Kampfer1445 i agree whole heartedly with you if your look to increase you off shore terrority then at a current size of 8 ship which should in reality be more like 14-16 ships of a larger and maybe frigite class

  • Not only does the Irish Navy need more ships, they need more effective warships. Without anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles the effectiveness of Ireland's warships is very limited in a wartime scenario. There is no reason why Irish ships are not fitted out with missiles; they are cheap, don't take up a great deal of room and actually enable the Irish Navy to defend themselves and the State from aircraft and to sink ships. Even a few missile boats would give the Navy some serious firepower.

  • I managed to miss the show too, thanking my lucky stars for youtube now! :D

We need a larger Navy, without a doubt. Acquiring the ships will be easy, trick will be to attract people into it.
