This is the film Singapore's censorship board doesn't want people to see. It's the story of opposition politician Chee Soon Juan, who has been imprisoned twice for championing democratic change in the city state. The censors declared it a "party political film" and it was pulled from April 2005's Singapore International Film Festival line-up after the director was warned he could face two years in jail if the screening went ahead. Directed by Martyn See. 'Singapore Rebel' has been selected to premiere in two human rights film festivals this month. The inaugural New Zealand Human Rights Film Festival and the Amnesty International Film Festival (USA) will host a series of screenings in Auckland, Wellington and West Hollywood. Film-maker Martyn See will not attend the festivals. He is now under investigation by the Singapore police for "the making" of 'Singapore Rebel'

This is the video that actually prompted me to get a Director's account on YouTube and take uploading more seriously. It's taken me this long to find the video again!

whether or not the dictatorship is benevolent or malevolent depends on the integrity of the individuals within the government. you cannot expect these individuals to outlive the next 50 years or more. a dictatorship is a dictatorship.
"3rd world sh*tholes" they may be, its better to be poor and enjoy high quality of life than to be poor in a rich city. singapore's GDP is lower than malaysia, thailand and indonesia despite these countries having large areas of rural land.
the success of this country depends on the integrity of the individuals governing it rather than the strength of the system. the country in 50 years will be determined by our actions today. stop banking on the track record. the country that we have today was built by the government who had no track record, no reputation, only a bunch of promises. people believed them. the government which made this country is hardly the government of today.
the bottom line is that less than half of the seats in parliament are contested. which means that more than half of the seats in parliament are won by default. this is hardly a government representative of the people. only a fraction of eligible voters have the opportunity. those who have make up a tiny fraction of the population.
dear jacky777able, i think you're comment totally shows how complacent and idiotic you are. i can see that's all you think about right? betelnut girls and fighting?
I recognise the wage gap, but you are incorrect that it one of the highest in the world. But compared to western democracies it is fairly wide. On the other hand, the Singapore government is able to subsidise housing (HDB) which consumes up to 50% of disposable income in some western democracies. Lastly, consider the region. The largest income group in Spore is 1000-2000SGD per month, which is 2428-4856 Malaysian Ringgit or 6,733,000-13,546,000 Indonesian Rupiah or 4934-9869 Chinese Yuan!
Sure, some may tink we are a communist country of sorts. BUT. does a communist country allow u to own private property? set up a company? if u wan to dig up history, u shud noe that EVERYTH is owned by the comm. govt. u wun be here typing away. Sg is a small country. We cannot afford to let freedom loose. We need our foundations to be regulated and strong to sustain such a small country lik ours. If u are discontent, why not join the opposition? u guys seem to noe wat sg needs. or leave sg
as you said, in a small country u can never have "freedom loose" as u say.
i think that if u love your country, you should look towards improving it for your family, your friends and your fellow singaporeans.
don't just stick around being conservative and throwing insults at those who actually care about bringing change for the good of all singaporeans. i think you are just being complacent and change/improvement-resistant.

Indonesia GDP: USD 514B Population: 282M PerCapGDP: 1,822
Thailand GDP: USD 261B Population: 67M PerCapGDP: 3,895
Singapore GDP: USD 182B Population: 5M PerCapGDP: 36,200
Sorry, no comparison.
And dictatorships? I don't see Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia as shining beacons of democracy sorry.
