VICTORIA - Navies from more than 20 nations are in Victoria for the Maritime Security Challenges conference.
Canada's Defence Minister Peter MacKay opened the event with a video address from Ottawa.
MacKay says oceans are like super highways and he believes it is essential that they be under close, constant surveillance.
Conference delegates will be discussing a range of issues including port security, maritime piracy as well as humanitarian aid and disaster response.
The Maritime Security Challenges conference wraps up Thursday at the Victoria Conference Centre.
