They are actually playing live, but using the original song in the background, like piano, b vocals and some snare in the verses. 1:17 you can hear backing vocals but either Dan or Derek are singing.

I hate to be the one that points this out, because I think this was a marvelous performance, but at 1:51 Derek scratches his nose with his left hand and is only hitting the hi hats with his right, yet the snare sound happening. Did he pantomime to the recording?
